Human trafficking is a global phenomenon, affecting millions of men, women, and children of different countries around the world, including the Ukraine. It is difficult to measure accurately the scope of human trafficking but the impacts of human trafficking are devastating. Human trafficking has broad economic, social and cultural consequences.

Human trafficking is a serious crime that deprives people of their human rights and freedoms, increases global health risks, fuels growing networks of organized crime, and can sustain levels of poverty and impede development in certain areas. Every year the human traffickers generate many billions of dollars of profit.

According to the Law of Ukraine “On Combating Trafficking in Human Beings” trafficking in human beings – settlement of an illegal agreement, the object of which is a human being, as well as recruitment, transportation, harbouring, transfer or receipt of a human being for purpose of his / her exploitation, including sexual, by means of deception, fraud, blackmail, abuse of a person’s position of vulnerability or by use of force or threat of use of force, with abuse of power or economic or other dependence of the victim on another person, which is considered a crime under the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The victim of trafficking in human beings – any natural person who has been subjected to trafficking in human beings and who has been declared a victim thereof in accordance with the provisions of this Law.

There are many forms of trafficking, for exemple trafficking for forced labour, trafficking in women for sexual exploitation, commercial sexual exploitation of children in tourism, trafficking for tissue, cells and organs, people smuggling etc. All forms of trafficking produce harmful effects on trafficked individuals. Traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to lure their victims and force them into labor or commercial sexual exploitation. Victims of human trafficking live in cities, suburbs, and rural areas and can be any age, gender, race and the human traffickers look for people who are susceptible for a variety of reasons, including psychological or emotional vulnerability, economic hardship, lack of a social safety net, natural disasters, or political instability. Despite the fact that the victims suffer physical and emotional abuse, rape, threats against self and family, and even death they rarely come forward to seek help through fear of the traffickers and/or fear of law enforcement.

Only one of the traditional approach to preventing trafficking in human beings, to protect and assist trafficked persons and bring criminals to justice have had some small impact on the global phenomenon is not enough. We understand that combating human trafficking requires a holistic approach and integrated action on prevention, protection and prosecution by governments of different countries, NGOs, and international organizations. We must combined forces with the police, lawyers, the judiciary, media, church and social workers and involved them in processes for prevention, protection, rehabilitation, prosecution and advocacy. Our activities include prevention, rescue, rehabilitation, restoration and social reintegration of victims of trafficking. Social, economic and psychological rehabilitation allows the victim to live with dignity in the society. Rehabilitation is a complete break from the past life, its experiences and memories.

Our aims are raising awareness of the people and mobilize society to stop trafficking. We must be resolve and support our initiatives to protect those who are vulnerable that can help save their life. For the purpose of prevention we must to inform vulnerable groups, we support and protect the victims by the counseling and psychological assistance. Today it is very important to identify victims of trafficking in time. We spread the information about the consequences of human trafficking to victims, including the violence they experience, the adverse health effects and the risk of revictimization.

We believe that collaboration at the national, bilateral, regional and international levels are very important. Only the concerted actions of all agents of the National Mechanism for Interaction of the Agents for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings will be successful.
